Ways I am not your typical university young adult:
- I sleep. A lot.
- I don’t like to drink alcohol
- I don’t like to go out at night (see #1)
- I don’t drink coffee
I sleep a lot (there’s a catch)
I just came back from an eye exam and my optometrist is very impressed that I still manage to get over 8 hours of sleep everyday. You probably don’t get asked about your sleeping habits during your eye exam, but I wear night contacts that require at least 7 hours of decent sleep to work. He told me many university students usually give up on wearing night correction contacts because they’ll pull all-nighters and find the next-day blurry vision a nuisance. Ask any of my friends and you’ll easily confirm that I’ll be in bed by 10pm on a school day, regardless of whether there’s an exam the next day or not. (Granny alert!) I prioritize sleep over studying because my philosophy is that if you don’t know it 12 hours before the exam, you probably will never know it so it’s better to just get a good night’s rest. Moral of the story: Sleep is more effective than studying (given you started studying ahead of time) and don’t text me after 10pm because I probably won’t reply until 6am. Oh yes, I wake up really early (because I’m like a granny) which is another reason I have to sleep early. My internal alarm adjusts for no one.
Alcohol is not my friend
Once I drank a single bellini in the afternoon (#daydrinking #itwasjustone) and I got such a big headache I had to call it a day at 5pm. Sleep fixes everything. I can drink a lot of almond milk but I can’t handle 1 oz of liquor. *shrugs*
Nightlife?
Not something that exists in my day to day routine. My kind of night is staying at home in my zebra or reindeer pajamas, taking a hot shower, baking a dozen cookies, or singing random songs while Chew plays the guitar. Why get all dressed up to go to a dark club where no one can see what the heck you’re wearing? Plus, I got to make it to bed before 10pm so that I’m not cranky from being awoken by my internal alarm.
You can talk to me before my cup of coffee
Ah caffeine. It gets lots of students through exam season, or just gets them to class in general. No coffee, no brainpower. I don’t really enjoy brewed coffee to begin with, and I seem to be highly sensitive to caffeine (like alcohol). I once drank a latte in the afternoon and I couldn’t fall asleep the entire night. Needless to say, especially after expressing the importance of sleep in my life, I was pretty cranky the next day. Nothing like a thick green smoothie to fix that though, right?
I may not like brewed coffee, but I love coffee flavoured things! One of our local ice cream parlours has this amazing coffee toffee ice cream, and my mom’s friend’s company makes a phenomenal coffee concentrate that makes every baked good taste ten times better. I also swear by adding a bit of coffee to my chocolate cakes. Chocolate and coffee should never be separated, so let’s keep them together when making these almond butter cups!
After Chew got me hooked on peanut butter in high school, I developed an appreciation for Reece’s cups. So much that I made my overnight oatmeal taste like it too! But I’m a dark chocolate girl, and love texture contrasts in my food. These almond butter cups are next-level-up: a gooey almond butter centre, crunchy bites of vanilla cereal, and of course, dark chocolate with a hit of espresso. One almond butter cup will surely satisfy your dessert cravings.
